In reply to Gert.

I used 1/2 a cup of sugar and that was good.

Of course! I would add a tablespoon of lemon zest to the scone batter. For a lemon glaze, you can replace some (or all) of the milk/water in the glaze with fresh lemon juice.

Hi Michelle! Did you use 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons – 1 whole stick) of butter and 1/2 cup of buttermilk (or cream)? The egg also helps to moisten the dough. Definitely shouldn’t be dry to where you can’t form the dough, I’m thinking an ingredient may have been missed or measured incorrectly?

Hi Patti! The buttermilk makes the scones lighter and cakier, while heavy cream will make them more dense. Yes, you can use strawberries! They weep a little as they bake, but are still delicious. Hope this helps!

Made two batches of these yesterday for a work event and they were a HUGE hit! I didn’t have buttermilk but used heavy cream instead. Do you notice a difference in using buttermilk? Want to make another batch but now I have strawberries. Have you tried to sub strawberries for blueberries?

Great recipe. I don’t like frostings or glazes (too sweet) so I mixed 2 Tbsp sugar and 1 Tbsp cinnamon together and sprinkled on top before baking. Awesome addition to flavor

Grating the butter makes them so nice and fluff. I added lemon zest since I have ample lemons from my tree. This recipe is a keeper!
